Notes for Metals and Non-Metals
Elements are classified into two basic categories, metals and non-metals.
Before giving the definition of metal and non-metal, we must know some important terms:
(i) Malleability: Ability of an element due to which it can be beaten with hammer into thin sheets.
(ii) Ductility: Ability of an element due to which it can be drawn into wires.
(iii) Sonorous: Property of an element to produce sound when it is struck with a hard substance.
(iv) Brittleness: Property of an element to break easily into pieces on hammering or stretching.

Thermodynamics deals with the change of energy in physical and chemical processes. It allows us to study these changes quantitatively as well as to make effective predictions. Therefore, we divide the universe as surrounding and system. Physical or chemical processes lead to progression or immersion of heat part of it may be converted to work. According to the first law of thermodynamics , these quantities are related as ∆U = q + w where q is heat and w is work. Change in internal energy is a state function and depends on only the initial and final states. On the other hand, w and q are not state functions. The change in temperature due to the transfer of heat one system to another system can be measured. Heat evolved or absorbed is expressed as q = C∆T. In the periodic table, there are six groups of p-block elements from 13 to 18 with an electronic configuration ns 2 Np 1–6 . It has all types of elements such as metalloids, non-metal, and metal. Their chemical and physical properties are highly influenced by the difference between the inner core of their electronic configuration . The lighter elements of the group have a quite stable group oxidation state. Heavier elements have more stable lower oxidation states. The heavier elements form dπ–dπ or dπ–pπ bonds whereas the lighter elements form pπ–pπ bonds. Electron Deficiency in Born Compounds An example of typical non-metal is boron.
